Couples Counseling in Portland

How could two people who were so in love not end up happily ever after?
–Elizabeth Gilbert

The calls to my office often start like this:

“I’m at the end of my rope. My spouse and I cannot seem to communicate anymore.”

Small irritants feel like an infected splinter you can’t quite find. The infection is spreading outward, throbbing into all aspects of your life together.

Sometimes, the splinter seems to go away. This is what gets you through.

You have a few days, a few weeks, even a few months of feeling like things will be ok. But then, one Sunday morning, you unwittingly bang up against the splinter as you are discussing the dirty dishes in the sink.

That splinter must not have gone away after all. The throbbing feeling quickly returns and you can feel the infection spread a little farther as your discussion devolves into yelling and one of you angrily leaves the room.

  • Do you feel unheard?
  • Can you no longer compromise?
  • Do you question what your future looks like?
  • Do you feel stuck?
  • Are you having the same arguments, over and over and over again?
  • Do you feel unsupported? Unappreciated?
  • Have you lost trust? Has there been an affair?
  • Can you no longer make decisions together?

The first step is a free phone consultation when we will talk about:

  • What made you pick up the phone to call me. Why are you feeling distressed over your relationship?
  • What you want out of counseling.
  • What you don’t want out of counseling.
  • What has worked in the past.
  • What hasn’t worked in the past.
  • Any questions you might have about therapy process and my practice.
  • What to do next.

How I help my clients:

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and I am passionate about working with couples. In fact, that is all I do in my therapy practice.

Why do I feel so passionately about couples counseling? My partner and I have been together for 17 years, we have been to couples counseling and I know it works.

Since 1998 my career, has in large part, been focused on crisis management and getting to the bottom of people’s unmet needs and communication gone wrong. This process is all about you, and I will guide you through difficult conversations and telling the truth to one another.

I will give you honest feedback and call you out when I see something can be done differently.

I draw from a wide variety of therapeutic approaches and am in the process of completing Level One Gottman certification.
