About Couples Counseling

Couples counseling provides a place for you:

  • To address the issues that are nagging away at you–the issues that you and your partner cannot seem to address on your own.
  • To vent, just a little though.
  • To increase your insight into both your actions and your reactions.

You have focused time only on you and your partner, with a qualified clinician (me) that acts as your mediator, your confidant, a guidance counselor of sorts; that gives you feedback which is kind but bluntly honest.

Couples counseling is a tool that will help you change your communication style, help you voice what you need and want, and help you admit to and share your personal truth.

Couples choose relationship therapy because they have had a break-down in communication and are frustrated. They reach out for help because they no longer trust each other but want to try to stay together. They step outside their comfort zone and go to counseling because they have stopped having sex and want to learn how to rekindle intimacy.

Couples decide on premarital counseling because they have been dating for some time and are going to get married; they want to resolve some of their issues ahead of the marriage.

Couples attend discernment counseling because they are at their breaking point and one is threatening to leave the other.

Couples choose divorce counseling because they already decided to split; they need to spend time discussing what happened and how to move forward, especially when they have children.

ABOUT ME

My partner and I have been together for 20 years. We have been to couples counseling, so I understand you both personally and professionally. I am a huge animal lover and spend most of my free time observing them, being inspired by them and rescuing dogs, cats, birds and even bumble bees.

My education and experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts from Middlebury College, emphasis on sociology and anthropology
  • Master’s degree from the University of Southern California where I specialized in clinical social work
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Certified Prepare Enrich PreMarital Counselor
  • Level One Certified Gottman Relationship Therapist
  • NDCompass Certified
  • As a social worker, I have counseled patients at a long-term care facility, helping them and their families cope with life’s changes as they faced chronic and life-threatening illness.
  • I have also worked on a mobile crisis team, as a therapist at an outpatient alcohol and drug treatment center, and was a supervisor of a clinical team that assessed in-patient psychiatric patients.
  • I also have a background in crisis management through my experiences as a small business owner and a Strategic Accounts Manager for a data and telecom company.
